Indiespace Event Review...June 27,
1999
Dark Star Studios / Daniel Hayes Uppendahl and others
Kspace members Jeannie Novak, Pete Markiewicz, and Michael Grodsky
attended an open studios event at Daniel Hayes Uppendahl's artist loft in
Downtown Los Angeles Saturday evening. In addition to Daniel's body piercing photography series (which can be seen at Kspace's Visionspace
gallery online), Daniel showcased two other striking series illustrating
the themes of motion and scars.
Other artists were exhibiting their works -- including Shingo Honda, Keith Schoenheit, and Ken Hollis. Shingo Honda
has recently completed an acrylic/mixed media on canvas series that juxtaposes linear architectural space ("left-brain") with loosely sketched
tulips ("right-brain").
Upcoming showings this year for Honda include Pacific Asia Museum (Aug-Sep) and LA Artcore (Sep). The effect of
photographer Keith Schoenheit's billboard images emerging in the backdrop
of city scenes (with all billboard lettering removed!) in B&W was eerie.
Finally, fashion photographer Ken Hollis presented a dramatically hip
combination works from his magazine spreads. As usual, Daniel Hayes Uppendahl was a great host -- providing plenty of food, drink, and great
conversation!
