INDIESPACE.COM FOUNDER
JEANNIE NOVAK ON THE COVER OF ZONE NEWS
SANTA MONICA, CA – Indiespace
CEO/Founder Jeannie Novak is not shy about saying things that
the rest of the music industry only thinks about. Appearing in
the cover story, “Knock You Out,” in the 8/00 issue of Zone
News (http://www.zonecommunications.com/finnews.html
-- click on the "Knock You Out" article link), Novak
is profiled as “taking on the big boys and girls of the music
biz” with her company, Indiespace. In the article, Novak
describes how she created Indiespace.com (formerly Kaleidospace)
to promote the careers of independent musicians, filmmakers and
artists via the Internet – while delivering a stinging
deconstruction of the ‘old guard’ music industry approach to
cyberspace.
"I go to a lot of music conferences,
and nobody wants to get signed anymore,” begins Novak, making
her case for major shifts within the music industry. Novak
contends that the traditional music industry’s approach to the
Internet – first neglect, then a frenzied round of lawsuits
against Napster and related websites – does not (and may
never) take advantage of cyberspace.
In contrast to the ‘Cigar Charlies,’
Novak has developed a radically different dotcom business model.
Indiespace does not copy radio, television and film by
purchasing artist rights and selling content. Instead, Novak has
grafted a web hosting service similar to Exodus and Verio onto
an artist management organization. Indiespace makes money by
selling artists a mix of web hosting, artist promotion, sales
and non-exclusive licensing – providing support while allowing
artists to retain most of their earnings and all of their
rights.
