At precisely
one second after midnight, January 1, 2000, the Los Angeles
based female pop/dance vocal group U4Ea! will attempt to become
the first recording artist to release their debut CD worldwide
over the Internet in the new millennium.
Indiespace.com,
an arts and entertainment web hosting, e-commerce, and design
company, is organizing the website launch effort.
Owned and operated by entrepreneurs Jeannie Novak and
Pete Markiewicz, Indiespace.com pioneered the online model for
music marketing and distribution in 1994.
U4Ea!
(Maxx, K.C. and Micki Dee), together since 1995, is an
interracial pop girl group whose nascence pre-dates the Spice
Girls by a year and has “slowly built a loyal following
through over 300 live performances,” according to their
manager, veteran Motown producer (Michael Jackson, Jackson 5,
Maxine Nightingale) Samm Brown. “Their extraordinary singing and high energy choreography
rival the best of the currently popular ‘boy groups.’ We thought that by waiting for this historic moment and
taking the opportunity to be the first on the web in the
millennium, this would be a great way to introduce U4Ea!
and their debut CD to the world.”
Indiespace.com’s
Novak and Markiewicz were excited and intrigued by the challenge
of being part of an Internet first.
Novak said, “The website will automatically welcome
each time zone as it enters the new millennium.
This is a wonderful way to make use of the Internet as a
global communications medium.”
