SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug. 9, 2001--Jeannie Novak, creator of the first independent arts & entertainment site on the Internet, has returned to her musical roots to record a dramatic and emotional work of music, located at jeannie.com. Titled ``Fifty Fathoms Deep,'' the song was inspired by and intended as a memorial to the crew of the Kursk, the ill-fated Russian submarine that sank with all hands on Aug. 12, 2000. Despite severe damage, a portion of the crew survived the initial blast. Hampered by politics and technology, rescuers lost the race against time and were unable to save the survivors of the initial blast. In writing ``Fifty Fathoms Deep,'' Novak chose a simple arrangement of solo piano and backup vocals to complement her own singing. The haunting, descending melodic shifts evoke a sense of loss, while the lyrics focus on the bravery and suffering experienced by the Kursk's crew. To promote the music and its message, Novak has posted free versions in MP3 and RealAudio format on her Web site, jeannie.com. The site includes additional information, lyrics (English & Russian) and a link to a network of Web sites dedicated to the Kursk. While the world community has created survivor benefit organizations, and Web sites memorializing the sailors who lost their lives are common, no song has been composed specifically to commemorate the crew of the Kursk. In creating ``Fifty Fathoms Deep,'' Novak has followed in the tradition of musical storytelling revolving around the sea and the lives of sailors, passengers and others lost through accident, war or weather. http://jeannie.com -- home page http://jeannie.com/kursk.html -- special Kursk page http://jeannie.com/sounds/fifty_fathoms_deep.mp3 -- MP3 file for ``Fifty Fathoms Deep''
